The program's main objectives are to prevent child labor, improve the working and living conditions of seasonal migrant agricultural workers, increase children's access to safe and supportive environments, and create lasting awareness among all stakeholders in the region. Its scope encompasses a broad range of stakeholders, from children aged 6-17 involved in the seasonal agricultural cycle to farm owners, worker families, and local institutions.<\/p>\r\n \r\n <p>The program offers a multi-dimensional and inclusive intervention model encompassing the Young Life Foundation's on-site training activities, school-based initiatives, school and family support kits, disaster awareness training, sustainable agricultural practices, monitoring and prevention systems, and referral of children to institutions in need. Through renewable energy production and improvements made in our factory, we achieved approximately 934 tons of CO\u2082e savings in 2024. Within the framework of the Turkish Sustainability Reporting Standards, the importance of evaluating the financial impacts of climate-related risks and opportunities was emphasized, and strategic steps considering the impacts of climate change were determined in Balsu's long-term planning.<\/p>\r\n <p>This work forms an important part of Balsu's goal to create a resilient, sustainable, and robust value chain in the face of climate change.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 2: Climate Change-Focused Sustainable Hazelnut Cultivation Project<\/h4>\r\n <p>As Balsu, through our Climate Change-Focused Sustainable Hazelnut Cultivation Project, which we have been carrying out in cooperation with the private sector since 2024, we are strengthening the technical capacity of farmers and ensuring the widespread adoption of good agricultural practices in order to secure the future of hazelnuts and support sustainable agriculture.<\/p>\r\n <p>In 2025, a total of 200 farmers received training and field support. In 2026, we are expanding the project to 350 farmers and aiming for a increase in the number of female farmers. Within the scope of the project, we closely monitor farmers' learning of sustainable agricultural techniques, their implementation of biological pest control measures, and their development of awareness regarding occupational health and safety. We track productivity indicators through agricultural practices in the field. Ere\u011fli (2023)<\/li>\r\n <\/ul>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 5: Integrated Pest Management Projects<\/h4>\r\n <p>In our projects aimed at combating diseases and pests encountered in hazelnut cultivation, we work in coordination with many stakeholders. These efforts particularly aim to strengthen regional monitoring capacity against the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys), a pest that has been affecting yield and quality in recent years.<\/p>\r\n <p>Provincial Agricultural Directorates, Chambers of Agriculture, producer associations, and sector stakeholders are working together to expand the use of pheromone traps and regularly monitor the regional population movements of the pest. To date, more than two thousand traps have been placed in Sakarya, D\u00fczce, Giresun, and Ordu provinces, and these monitoring efforts contribute to the controlled and targeted management of agricultural chemicals.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 6: Sakarya University of Applied Sciences \u2013 Development of Pollinator Varieties Against Climate Change Project<\/h4>\r\n <p>The effects of climate change are increasingly causing yield and quality losses in hazelnut farming. Therefore, we prioritize developing scientific solutions to protect the future of hazelnut cultivation.<\/p>\r\n <p>In the Pollinator Variety Development Project that we started with Sakarya University of Applied Sciences in 2022, our goals with the studies conducted on the \u00c7ak\u0131ldak variety are to develop resistant and high-performance varieties that will increase yield and quality for hazelnuts, and to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers during the nutrition and development periods.<\/p>\r\n <p>This collaboration is an important part of Balsu\u2019s long-term approach to supporting sustainable hazelnut cultivation, in line with its goal of climate-resilient agriculture.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 7: Increasing Yield and Quality in Sustainable Hazelnut Production and Achieving Improvement Targets Through Integrated Pest Management Methods<\/h4>\r\n <p>As part of our efforts towards sustainable hazelnut cultivation, through our collaborative project with D\u00fczce University, we aimed to provide farmers with up-to-date and scientifically based information and support them in implementing correct agricultural practices. Throughout the project, we supported it with theoretical and practical training, aiming to raise awareness on the following focus areas:<\/p>\r\n <ul>\r\n <li>Recycling of hazelnut husks.<\/li>\r\n <li>The effects of pruning on yield, fruit quality, and plant health.<\/li>\r\n <li>The Integrated Pest Management approach involves regular monitoring of diseases and pests, and targeted biological control measures based on threshold values.<\/li>\r\n <\/ul>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 8: <a href=\"https:\/\/genchayat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Findik-Bahane-2021-2023-Bilgi-Notu.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:inherit; text-decoration:underline;\">Hazelnut Project as an Excuse<\/a><\/h4>\r\n <p>Balsu adopted the responsibility of ensuring children's safety and access to education as a fundamental principle, and served as the head of the Young Life Foundation between 2014 and 2023. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genchayat.org\/portfolio\/findik-bahane-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">\""Hazelnuts are just an excuse"\"<\/a> It provided support to the project as part of the collaboration.<\/p>\r\n <p>As part of a project aimed at supporting the academic and social development of children of seasonal migrant agricultural workers, summer schools were opened and safe learning environments were created for the children. Through summer schools and on-site education models implemented since 2014, 11,419 children have been reached.<\/p>\r\n <p>To support the continuity of educational processes, scholarships, stationery, and food aid were provided; scholarship support was given to 229 children aged 11-17. In addition to support for children, social development activities were also carried out for families and farmers in the region.<\/p>\r\n <p>Innovative Thinking Training, a key component of the project, was conducted in D\u00fczce, Ordu, Sakarya, and Samsun provinces with the participation of 2,634 children. The content of these trainings and the children's creative work, along with expert evaluations, are available. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genchayat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Umudun-rengi-nedir_-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">\""What is the Color of Hope?"\"<\/a> It was published in the book titled [book title].<\/p>\r\n <p>Throughout the project period, monitoring and guidance processes aimed at preventing risks related to child labor were carried out in collaboration with suppliers and local stakeholders.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 9: <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.rvo.nl\/projects\/nl-kvk-27378529-fbk21s08b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:inherit; text-decoration:underline;\">Sustainable Hazelnut Villages Project<\/a><\/h4>\r\n <p>The project, implemented between 2021 and 2025, aimed to reduce child labor and improve the working and living conditions of seasonal migrant agricultural workers and their families in the Sakarya-Ferizli region.<\/p>\r\n <p>The project, implemented in collaboration with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), Rainforest Alliance, Young Life Foundation, and Balsu, has established a strong stakeholder network with a district-based monitoring board including public institutions, NGOs, agricultural intermediaries, the private sector, and leading farmers.<\/p>\r\n <p>In line with the project's objectives, safe spaces were created for children and summer schools were opened, aiming to effectively combat child labor.<\/p>\r\n <h4>Project outputs:<\/h4>\r\n <ul>\r\n <li>7 committee meetings before and after the harvest.<\/li>\r\n <li>Health, hygiene and infrastructure improvements in more than 10 worker accommodation areas.<\/li>\r\n <li>Summer school, workshop and safe space support for 243 children.<\/li>\r\n <li>Training sessions were conducted for 472 farmers, aiming to raise awareness about registered employment stages in seasonal agriculture, sustainable agricultural practices, and child labor.<\/li>\r\n <li>Certification of 24 agricultural labor agents through cooperation with public institutions.<\/li>\r\n <li>Training for 44 agricultural workers<\/li>\r\n <li>Training for 1,020 seasonal agricultural workers.<\/li>\r\n <\/ul>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 10: Strong Women, Strong Agriculture Project<\/h4>\r\n <p>At Balsu, we consider strengthening the critical role of women farmers and seasonal migrant workers in agriculture as one of our priorities. Believing in the transformative impact of women's labor in agriculture, we implement holistic programs for both women farmers and women workers; and we support equal opportunities at every stage of the hazelnut supply chain.<\/p>\r\n <p>An independent supply chain monitoring study conducted by the Fair Labor Association (FLA) in 2017 revealed significant needs for empowering women, particularly in the areas of social cohesion, access to rights, and capacity building. In line with this, the "Strong Women, Strong Agriculture" Program was implemented, completing three years of comprehensive fieldwork, focus group discussions, and training activities based on needs analysis.<\/p>\r\n <p>The experience and achievements gained from this project have ensured that women-focused initiatives form a fundamental building block of Balsu's sustainability programs. Today, supporting the empowerment of women in agriculture remains an integral part of Balsu's social impact approach.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 11: Harvesting the Future Project<\/h4>\r\n <p>This has been carried out under the coordination of the Fair Work Association (FLA), of which we have been a member since 2013. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/projects\/harvesting-the-future-access-to-remedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">\""Harvesting the Future"\"<\/a> We are playing an active role in the project. The project has a comprehensive approach that includes addressing the risks of child labor in seasonal migratory agriculture, strengthening solution mechanisms, creating safe spaces, developing family support models, and supporting learning processes between different agricultural sectors. Our field work in the hazelnut supply chain is progressing in line with these components of the project.<\/p>\r\n <p>Balsu shares her experiences regarding social compliance, resolution mechanisms, and supply chain practices within the scope of the project. The functioning of complaint mechanisms, challenges encountered in the field, implemented solutions, and best practices are shared with FLA member organizations, serving as an important resource guiding institutions that want to improve compliance processes in different supply chains.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 12: USDoL Child Labour Prevention and Social Integration Program<\/h4>\r\n <p>In the period 2016-2018, efforts were made in the Black Sea and Southeastern Anatolia regions to prevent child labor and improve working conditions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/ilab\/resources\/reports\/child-labor\/turkey-turkiye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">USDoL<\/a> We contributed to the Child Labor Prevention and Social Integration Program. Based on the risks identified through independent field assessments, social integration efforts were carried out for families, children, and farmers.<\/p>\r\n <p>Within the scope of the program:<\/p>\r\n <ul>\r\n <li>Children's access to safe spaces was supported.<\/li>\r\n <li>Awareness among families has been increased.<\/li>\r\n <li>Farmers were informed about social compliance.<\/li>\r\n <li>Age verification and registered employment processes have been strengthened.<\/li>\r\n <\/ul>\r\n <p>Through project activities, 219 agricultural intermediaries were identified and 89 were registered; additionally, training was provided to more than 500 people, including community members, public officials, and teachers. The USDoL program contributed to the protection of children during harvest seasons through safe learning spaces and social support mechanisms. Published evaluations revealed that the program strengthened social cohesion in the supply chain. Balsu supported the widespread adoption of responsible working conditions through collaborations with stakeholders throughout this process.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 13: <a href=\"https:\/\/genchayat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/egitimkucugunisbuyugun_projesonuckitabi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:inherit; text-decoration:underline;\">Education is a project for the young, business is a project for the grown-up.<\/a><\/h4>\r\n <p><a href=\"https:\/\/genchayat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/egitimkucugunisbuyugun_projesonuckitabi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">\""Education is for the young, work is for the old."\"<\/a> The project is a comprehensive social integration project implemented by the Young Life Foundation under the Ministry of Labor and Social Security's DES\u0130P Grant Program, with the support of Balsu. This work was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, D\u00fczce University, Karacada\u011f Development Agency, and the Ministry of National Education.<\/p>\r\n <p>The project aimed to improve the working and living conditions of seasonal agricultural worker families, strengthen children's connection to education, and increase families' access to local resources. To this end, summer schools were opened in both migrant-sending and migrant-receiving provinces, creating safe learning environments for children and implementing activities that support their reintegration into education.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Responsible\u00ae Program<\/h4>\r\n <p>As of 2025, we have joined the Green Deal Alignment Project Support \u2013 Responsible\u00ae Program, run by the Ministry of Trade. Our Responsible\u00ae membership will provide a significant preparedness advantage and operational strength in the Green Transformation Program alignment process towards the 2053 Net Zero target.<\/p>\r\n <p>In the first phase of the three-phase program, a current situation analysis and sustainability roadmap were completed; project cards specific to Balsu were created. Continuously developed in light of approximately 10 years of field experience, needs analyses, and stakeholder feedback, this structure has transformed into a powerful social impact program centered on protecting children and supporting decent living conditions in seasonal agriculture. This long-term experience has significantly shaped Balsu's sustainability approach. Monitoring Sustainable Agricultural Practices and Product-Supplier Traceability<\/h4>\r\n <p>We aim to ensure 0 traceability by supporting all stages of our supply chain with digital infrastructure. Through the SAP sustainability interface, we track the entire process from the moment hazelnuts are grown in the orchard to their arrival at the customer in an integrated manner via a single platform. By digitally recording the purchasing, transportation, storage, processing, and shipment steps, we create a verifiable and transparent structure.<\/p>\r\n <p>Traceability studies begin when the product is still in the orchard stage. We integrate farmers into the system by evaluating their sustainability practices, working conditions, environmental awareness, and agricultural performance. This ensures that the entire journey of the product, from the orchard to the factory and from the factory to the customer, becomes fully traceable and reportable.<\/p>\r\n <p>We collect comprehensive production data to trace hazelnuts sourced from certified farmers all the way to the orchard. Data such as farmer information, GPS location, estimated production, input usage, quality measurements, and harvest profiles are processed into a digital system. This allows for highly accurate tracking of product movements throughout the supply chain.<\/p>\r\n\r\n <h4>2. Farmer Profile and Performance Tracking<\/h4>\r\n <p>We regularly monitor the sustainability compliance, agricultural performance, labor structure, and social conditions of the farmers who are at the heart of our supply chain. Based on the collected data, we segment farmers regionally and thematically, enabling us to deliver training, field visits, and support programs at the right time.<\/p>\r\n <p>Agricultural practices, integrated pest management, quality, and occupational health and safety are regularly evaluated; sustainability-focused development plans are created for each farmer. Environmental, social, and governance risks are identified and managed systematically at an early stage, and continuous improvement in the supply chain is supported.<\/p>\r\n\r\n <h4>3. Supplier Risk Assessment<\/h4>\r\n <p>We evaluate all our suppliers in the supply chain using a holistic approach based on social, environmental, and ethical criteria. This data helps us assess the impacts of climate change on hazelnut production and identify regional risks. As part of integrated pest management, we support timely and accurate intervention by monitoring pest populations with smart trap systems.<\/p>\r\n\r\n <h4>Product Development and Monitoring<\/h4>\r\n <p>We monitor the developmental processes of the hazelnut plant through phenological observation studies. Thanks to these studies, we analyze the factors affecting product quality and ensure more effective implementation of soil management, irrigation, fertilization, and pest management strategies. In this way, we aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the first link of our supply chain.<\/p>\r\n <p>With our rooftop solar power system having an installed capacity of 1.9 MWp, we meet 1 TP3T34 of our electricity needs with renewable energy. Through renewable energy production and improvements made in our factory, we achieved approximately 934 tons of CO\u2082e savings in 2024. With the 9,410,000 MWh I-REC certification we have obtained since 2020, we have fully offset our Scope 2 emissions.<\/p>\r\n <p>We view hazelnut shells as a valuable resource rather than waste; at our Hendek facility, we produce high value-added activated carbon from these shells. Within the framework of the Turkish Sustainability Reporting Standards, the importance of evaluating the financial impacts of climate-related risks and opportunities was emphasized, and strategic steps considering the impacts of climate change were determined in Balsu's long-term planning.<\/p>\r\n <p>This work forms an important part of Balsu's goal to create a resilient, sustainable, and robust value chain in the face of climate change.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 2: Climate Change-Focused Sustainable Hazelnut Cultivation Project<\/h4>\r\n <p>As Balsu, through our Climate Change-Focused Sustainable Hazelnut Cultivation Project, which we have been carrying out in cooperation with the private sector since 2024, we are strengthening the technical capacity of farmers and ensuring the widespread adoption of good agricultural practices in order to secure the future of hazelnuts and support sustainable agriculture.<\/p>\r\n <p>In 2025, a total of 200 farmers received training and field support. In 2026, we are expanding the project to 350 farmers and aiming for a increase in the number of female farmers. Within the scope of the project, we closely monitor farmers' learning of sustainable agricultural techniques, their implementation of biological pest control measures, and their development of awareness regarding occupational health and safety. We track productivity indicators through agricultural practices in the field. Through social programs, we also empower women, promote registered employment, and develop decent work models.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 3: Technical Transfer Group Project<\/h4>\r\n <p>Our Technical Transfer Group Project within our supply chain aims to strengthen the agricultural and social technical knowledge and application capacities of leading farmers, to facilitate the transfer of this expertise to other farmers in the region, and to provide leading farmers with equipment support to support their field practices.<\/p>\r\n <p>As part of the project, regular meetings, field visits, and evaluation studies are conducted with leading farmers; during this process, a common approach to sustainable farming practices is developed. Leading farmers create exemplary practice areas in their regions, serving as references for other farmers and contributing to the continuity of knowledge transfer.<\/p>\r\n <p>Another component of the project is strengthening social practice capacity in areas such as seasonal agricultural workers, workers' rights, and the prevention of child labor. These efforts particularly aim to strengthen regional monitoring capacity against the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys), a pest that has been affecting yield and quality in recent years.<\/p>\r\n <p>Provincial Agricultural Directorates, Chambers of Agriculture, producer associations, and sector stakeholders are working together to expand the use of pheromone traps and regularly monitor the regional population movements of the pest. To date, more than two thousand traps have been placed in Sakarya, D\u00fczce, Giresun, and Ordu provinces, and these monitoring efforts contribute to the controlled and targeted management of agricultural chemicals.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 6: Sakarya University of Applied Sciences \u2013 Development of Pollinator Varieties Against Climate Change Project<\/h4>\r\n <p>The effects of climate change are increasingly causing yield and quality losses in hazelnut farming. Therefore, we prioritize developing scientific solutions to protect the future of hazelnut cultivation.<\/p>\r\n <p>In the Pollinator Variety Development Project that we started with Sakarya University of Applied Sciences in 2022, our goals with the studies conducted on the \u00c7ak\u0131ldak variety are to develop resistant and high-performance varieties that will increase yield and quality for hazelnuts, and to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers during the nutrition and development periods.<\/p>\r\n <p>This collaboration is an important part of Balsu\u2019s long-term approach to supporting sustainable hazelnut cultivation, in line with its goal of climate-resilient agriculture.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 7: Increasing Yield and Quality in Sustainable Hazelnut Production and Achieving Improvement Targets Through Integrated Pest Management Methods<\/h4>\r\n <p>As part of our efforts towards sustainable hazelnut cultivation, through our collaborative project with D\u00fczce University, we aimed to provide farmers with up-to-date and scientifically based information and support them in implementing correct agricultural practices. Throughout the project, we supported it with theoretical and practical training, aiming to raise awareness on the following focus areas:<\/p>\r\n <ul>\r\n <li>Recycling of hazelnut husks.<\/li>\r\n <li>The effects of pruning on yield, fruit quality, and plant health.<\/li>\r\n <li>The Integrated Pest Management approach involves regular monitoring of diseases and pests, and targeted biological control measures based on threshold values.<\/li>\r\n <\/ul>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 8: <a href=\"https:\/\/genchayat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Findik-Bahane-2021-2023-Bilgi-Notu.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:inherit; text-decoration:underline;\">Hazelnut Project as an Excuse<\/a><\/h4>\r\n <p>Balsu adopted the responsibility of ensuring children's safety and access to education as a fundamental principle, and served as the head of the Young Life Foundation between 2014 and 2023. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genchayat.org\/portfolio\/findik-bahane-2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">\""Hazelnuts are just an excuse"\"<\/a> It provided support to the project as part of the collaboration.<\/p>\r\n <p>As part of a project aimed at supporting the academic and social development of children of seasonal migrant agricultural workers, summer schools were opened and safe learning environments were created for the children. Through summer schools and on-site education models implemented since 2014, 11,419 children have been reached.<\/p>\r\n <p>To support the continuity of educational processes, scholarships, stationery, and food aid were provided; scholarship support was given to 229 children aged 11-17. In addition to support for children, social development activities were also carried out for families and farmers in the region.<\/p>\r\n <p>Innovative Thinking Training, a key component of the project, was conducted in D\u00fczce, Ordu, Sakarya, and Samsun provinces with the participation of 2,634 children. The content of these trainings and the children's creative work, along with expert evaluations, are available. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genchayat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Umudun-rengi-nedir_-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">\""What is the Color of Hope?"\"<\/a> It was published in the book titled [book title].<\/p>\r\n <p>Throughout the project period, monitoring and guidance processes aimed at preventing risks related to child labor were carried out in collaboration with suppliers and local stakeholders.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 9: <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.rvo.nl\/projects\/nl-kvk-27378529-fbk21s08b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:inherit; text-decoration:underline;\">Sustainable Hazelnut Villages Project<\/a><\/h4>\r\n <p>The project, implemented between 2021 and 2025, aimed to reduce child labor and improve the working and living conditions of seasonal migrant agricultural workers and their families in the Sakarya-Ferizli region.<\/p>\r\n <p>The project, implemented in collaboration with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), Rainforest Alliance, Young Life Foundation, and Balsu, has established a strong stakeholder network with a district-based monitoring board including public institutions, NGOs, agricultural intermediaries, the private sector, and leading farmers.<\/p>\r\n <p>In line with the project's objectives, safe spaces were created for children and summer schools were opened, aiming to effectively combat child labor.<\/p>\r\n <h4>Project outputs:<\/h4>\r\n <ul>\r\n <li>7 committee meetings before and after the harvest.<\/li>\r\n <li>Health, hygiene and infrastructure improvements in more than 10 worker accommodation areas.<\/li>\r\n <li>Summer school, workshop and safe space support for 243 children.<\/li>\r\n <li>Training sessions were conducted for 472 farmers, aiming to raise awareness about registered employment stages in seasonal agriculture, sustainable agricultural practices, and child labor.<\/li>\r\n <li>Certification of 24 agricultural labor agents through cooperation with public institutions.<\/li>\r\n <li>Training for 44 agricultural workers<\/li>\r\n <li>Training for 1,020 seasonal agricultural workers.<\/li>\r\n <\/ul>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 10: Strong Women, Strong Agriculture Project<\/h4>\r\n <p>At Balsu, we consider strengthening the critical role of women farmers and seasonal migrant workers in agriculture as one of our priorities. Believing in the transformative impact of women's labor in agriculture, we implement holistic programs for both women farmers and women workers; and we support equal opportunities at every stage of the hazelnut supply chain.<\/p>\r\n <p>An independent supply chain monitoring study conducted by the Fair Labor Association (FLA) in 2017 revealed significant needs for empowering women, particularly in the areas of social cohesion, access to rights, and capacity building. In line with this, the "Strong Women, Strong Agriculture" Program was implemented, completing three years of comprehensive fieldwork, focus group discussions, and training activities based on needs analysis.<\/p>\r\n <p>The experience and achievements gained from this project have ensured that women-focused initiatives form a fundamental building block of Balsu's sustainability programs. Today, supporting the empowerment of women in agriculture remains an integral part of Balsu's social impact approach.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 11: Harvesting the Future Project<\/h4>\r\n <p>This has been carried out under the coordination of the Fair Work Association (FLA), of which we have been a member since 2013. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/projects\/harvesting-the-future-access-to-remedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">\""Harvesting the Future"\"<\/a> We are playing an active role in the project. The project has a comprehensive approach that includes addressing the risks of child labor in seasonal migratory agriculture, strengthening solution mechanisms, creating safe spaces, developing family support models, and supporting learning processes between different agricultural sectors. Our field work in the hazelnut supply chain is progressing in line with these components of the project.<\/p>\r\n <p>Balsu shares her experiences regarding social compliance, resolution mechanisms, and supply chain practices within the scope of the project. The functioning of complaint mechanisms, challenges encountered in the field, implemented solutions, and best practices are shared with FLA member organizations, serving as an important resource guiding institutions that want to improve compliance processes in different supply chains.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 12: USDoL Child Labour Prevention and Social Integration Program<\/h4>\r\n <p>In the period 2016-2018, efforts were made in the Black Sea and Southeastern Anatolia regions to prevent child labor and improve working conditions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/ilab\/resources\/reports\/child-labor\/turkey-turkiye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">USDoL<\/a> We contributed to the Child Labor Prevention and Social Integration Program. Based on the risks identified through independent field assessments, social integration efforts were carried out for families, children, and farmers.<\/p>\r\n <p>Within the scope of the program:<\/p>\r\n <ul>\r\n <li>Children's access to safe spaces was supported.<\/li>\r\n <li>Awareness among families has been increased.<\/li>\r\n <li>Farmers were informed about social compliance.<\/li>\r\n <li>Age verification and registered employment processes have been strengthened.<\/li>\r\n <\/ul>\r\n <p>Through project activities, 219 agricultural intermediaries were identified and 89 were registered; additionally, training was provided to more than 500 people, including community members, public officials, and teachers. The USDoL program contributed to the protection of children during harvest seasons through safe learning spaces and social support mechanisms. Published evaluations revealed that the program strengthened social cohesion in the supply chain. Balsu supported the widespread adoption of responsible working conditions through collaborations with stakeholders throughout this process.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Project 13: <a href=\"https:\/\/genchayat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/egitimkucugunisbuyugun_projesonuckitabi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:inherit; text-decoration:underline;\">Education is a project for the young, business is a project for the grown-up.<\/a><\/h4>\r\n <p><a href=\"https:\/\/genchayat.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/egitimkucugunisbuyugun_projesonuckitabi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color:var(--sur-green); text-decoration:underline;\">\""Education is for the young, work is for the old."\"<\/a> The project is a comprehensive social integration project implemented by the Young Life Foundation under the Ministry of Labor and Social Security's DES\u0130P Grant Program, with the support of Balsu. This work was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, D\u00fczce University, Karacada\u011f Development Agency, and the Ministry of National Education.<\/p>\r\n <p>The project aimed to improve the working and living conditions of seasonal agricultural worker families, strengthen children's connection to education, and increase families' access to local resources. To this end, summer schools were opened in both migrant-sending and migrant-receiving provinces, creating safe learning environments for children and implementing activities that support their reintegration into education.<\/p>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <div class=\"sur-project-item\">\r\n <h4>Responsible\u00ae Program<\/h4>\r\n <p>As of 2025, we have joined the Green Deal Alignment Project Support \u2013 Responsible\u00ae Program, run by the Ministry of Trade.
